Acquisitions Editor

Stanford University Press seeks an energetic, experienced publishing professional to acquire scholarly and professional books in business and economics. Reporting to the Editor-in-Chief, this individual will play a key role in the development and shaping of these lists for the Press.

Responsibilities include acquiring and developing 25 titles per year, soliciting and evaluating proposals and manuscripts, working with series editors, preparing publishing plans to present to the editorial board, negotiating contracts with authors or agents, and consulting with production and marketing. The acquisitions editor works closely with authors, as well as a shared editorial assistant, to ensure that manuscripts are of high quality, well prepared, and meet scholarly, market, and financial expectations. The acquisitions editor is expected to travel to scholarly conferences and university campuses. Title and salary will be commensurate with experience.

Rights and Permissions Manager

Stanford University Press is seeking a Rights and Permissions Manager to work in our Redwood City office. Reporting to the Press Director, this position requires familiarity with the legal principles underlying contract and intellectual property law.

Responsibilities include: preparing all contracts with authors and consulting on and approving translation licenses and co-publication agreements with foreign publishers; providing information on publishing rights, royalties, and copyright to authors and others; ensuring needed permissions, releases, etc., have been obtained and that contractual requirements are met; making final determination on whether or not materials published in Press books legally conform to fair use precedents of copyright law; preparing copyright registrations for books as they are published; and negotiating foreign rights sales and licensing.
