Stanford University Press Partnering with Knowledge Unlatched to Coordinate Library Subscription Services for S2O Journals
Stanford, CA: September 25, 2025: Stanford University Press (SUP) is delighted to announce it is employing the services of Knowledge Unlatched (KU) for subscription management of a new series of Subscribe to Open (S2O) journals. Under an S2O model, libraries subscribe to journals, and through their support, allow those journals to become open to all.
KU is a nonprofit venture founded in 2012 to support open access books and has evolved to also support open access journal publishers who have adopted the S2O model pioneered by its nonprofit parent organization, Annual Reviews (AR). The S2O model is now being used by nearly 30 publishers to open over 400 journals.
Under the new agreement, KU will begin marketing and selling subscriptions to SUP journals in their current offerings for 2026, whether standalone or as part of packages including other titles, to libraries and consortia. KU’s recent catalog announces SUP journals will be added as they are launched.
“The Knowledge Unlatched team is delighted to partner with Stanford University Press to strengthen nonprofit publishing for the benefit of scholars and societies. SUP’s adoption of Subscribe to Open for their exciting journal program highlights the growing recognition of this model as a practical, sustainable route to open access” said Andrea Lopez, Director of Sales, Partnerships & Initiatives, Knowledge Unlatched.
“At the current moment, there is a strong movement to establish nonprofit ownership and management of an increasing number of scholarly journals,” said Jasmine Mulliken, SUP’s Journals and Digital Program Manager. “Stanford University Press and the Public Knowledge Project are excited to be working with KU to launch our journals under a model that each publication’s editorial board believes so strongly in. We’re looking forward to adding even more titles as the program continues to grow.”
Stanford University Press publishes 140 books a year across the humanities, social sciences, law, and business. These books inform scholarly debate, generate global and cross-cultural discussion, and bring timely, peer-reviewed scholarship to the wider reading public. At the leading edge of both print and digital dissemination of innovative research, with about 4,000 books currently in print, SUP is a publisher of ideas that matter, books that endure. In 2023, Stanford University Press inaugurated its journals program by partnering with the Public Knowledge Project, and launched its first journal, Reviews of Economic Literature, in 2025.
